Core aeration machine on green Australian lawn with soil plugs

Lawn Aeration & Dethatching Hills District

Compacted soil is one of the most common problems for Hills District lawns. Heavy clay soils, foot traffic, and regular mowing all compress the ground over time — preventing water, nutrients, and oxygen from reaching your grass roots. Lawn aeration and dethatching are the solutions.

What Is Lawn Aeration?

Not sure if you need aeration or dethatching? Read our detailed comparison: lawn aeration vs dethatching. The right treatment depends on your specific problem.

Aeration involves creating small holes in your lawn to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the soil. This relieves compaction, encourages deeper root growth, and improves overall lawn health. We use professional-grade core aerators that remove small plugs of soil — far more effective than spike aerators that can actually worsen compaction.

What Is Dethatching?

Thatch is the layer of dead grass, roots, and debris that builds up between the soil and the green grass blades. A thin layer is normal. A thick layer (over 1cm) chokes your lawn — water runs off instead of soaking in, fertiliser sits on top, and grass roots grow into the thatch instead of the soil. Dethatching removes this layer.

When Does Your Lawn Need It?

  • Water pools on the surface after rain or watering
  • Grass feels spongy underfoot
  • Bare patches that won’t recover despite watering and fertilising
  • Yellowing grass despite regular care
  • Heavy foot traffic areas (kids, pets, entertaining)

Best Time for Aeration in Sydney

Autumn (March-May) is ideal. The soil is still warm, grass is actively growing, and the cooler air reduces stress on the lawn. Spring is also good. We recommend annual aeration for most Hills District lawns — more often for heavy clay soils or high-traffic areas.
