Sydney’s climate gives us year-round growing conditions — but what your lawn needs changes dramatically with the seasons.
Spring (Sep-Nov)
Two of the biggest seasonal mistakes are fertilising at the wrong time and letting bindii weeds get established. Get these right and the rest follows.
- Mow weekly — Growth accelerates quickly
- Dethatch if needed — Remove dead grass buildup from winter
- Apply slow-release fertiliser — Fuels the spring growth surge
- Hit weeds early — Bindii and winter grass are still active
Summer (Dec-Feb)
- Raise mowing height — Longer grass shades soil and retains moisture
- Water deeply, not frequently — 2-3 deep waterings per week
- Mow in the evening — Cutting in peak heat stresses grass
- Watch for lawn grubs — Brown patches that peel back like carpet? African Black Beetle
Autumn (Mar-May)
- Overseed bare patches — Warm soil + cool air = perfect germination
- Aerate compacted soil — Relieves summer traffic compaction
- Pre-emergent herbicide — Stop winter weeds before they start
- Potassium-rich fertiliser — Strengthens roots for winter
Winter (Jun-Aug)
- Mow every 2-3 weeks — Just enough to keep tidy
- Never mow wet or frosty grass — You’ll tear the turf
- Control winter weeds — They thrive in cool, damp conditions
- Service equipment — Sharpen blades, clean filters during off-season
At Grass Blades, we manage all of this automatically. Seasonal adjustments are part of our weekly service. Get your free first mow →
